Rule-of-Law Volunteer Opportunities for Attorneys Through JDC

Special Immigrant Juvenile Status Project

JDC’s Special Immigrant Juvenile (SIJ) Status Project helps undocumented children who have been abused, neglected, or abandoned by one or both parents begin the process of obtaining lawful permanent residency. As a volunteer attorney, you will represent a child in San Francisco Superior Court to secure the necessary SIJ Findings. Your role concludes once these findings are obtained—JDC’s Immigration Department handles the remainder of the immigration process. The case involves a single court appearance and typically requires a commitment of 15–20 hours over a 4 to 6-month period, depending on the court schedule.

Family Preparedness Clinic (for mixed status families threatened with deportation of parents)

Volunteer attorneys are needed for our Family Preparedness Clinic, which supports mixed-status immigrant families in planning for the care of their U.S. citizen children in the event of deportation. Volunteers will assist parents with completing legal documents such as the Nomination of Guardian and Caregiver’s Authorization Affidavit, and help families gather key records—including proof of residence and employment, translated birth certificates, and school and medical information—to ensure children remain safe and parents have the documents needed for deportation defense and to access their finances. Training, materials, and language support are provided; no experience required.

CORP – DEI Compliance Clinic

JDC offers a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Compliance Clinic to support nonprofit organizations in California with understanding and meeting their legal and ethical obligations related to DEI. Volunteer attorneys will assist nonprofits in reviewing and developing policies, bylaws, hiring practices, and board governance structures to promote inclusivity and ensure compliance with applicable state and federal non-discrimination laws.

Join the LRIS

The rule of law is a long-standing principle shaping our country, written into the constitution to ensure that the everyday lives of all citizens are protected for all and not subject to the power and whim of one. From citizenship and immigration to patent rights, to workplace protections, the vulnerabilities are real. People are calling the LRIS, seeking to hire and an attorney because they were fired, their business contracts are in jeopardy, their loved ones are facing removal and more.

While we live in an area rich in resources and programs, many people cannot find help due to capacity or funding. Obviously, these needs and issues don’t disappear. It is at times like this that people need to hire an attorney. The SF-Marin LRIS is the most robust referral program in the area, handling over 50 thousand requests for help each year because the community trusts us. Our lawyers stand up for their clients, and they stand up for the rule of law.

Donate Today - Defend Justice, Advance Equity, Uphold the Rule of Law

The Justice & Diversity Center (JDC) of the Bar Association of San Francisco is one of the largest and most impactful legal service providers in the region. Every year, we support thousands of low-income people—tenants fighting to stay housed, immigrants seeking safety, families navigating complex legal systems—with the legal help they need and deserve.
JDC shares a deep commitment with the Bar Association of San Francisco to a just and inclusive society. We are united by our belief that the rule of law must be accessible to everyone—not just the few who can afford it.

At a time when legal systems are under strain and fundamental rights are at risk, our work is more critical than ever. Through JDC’s direct services and BASF’s Rule of Law initiatives, we stand together to protect access to justice and uphold the principles that are the foundation of our democracy.

Your donation makes our ability to do this work possible.
  • $250 could cover the cost of one of these steps:
    • A quick legal consultation
    • A pro se application asylum filing
    • Docket coverage for an attorney through our Attorney of the Day (AOD) program
  • $500 could help provide legal support for a family navigating domestic violence and custody challenges.
  • $1,570 could cover the cost of a Legal Advice and Referral Clinic (LARC), a free clinic in San Francisco providing legal advice and referrals to those who cannot afford legal representation.

When you give to JDC, you don’t just support legal aid—you strengthen the rule of law itself.

Together, we can protect rights, expand opportunities, and make justice real for everyone in our community.
