What is LARR and what services does it offer?

Launched in June 2022, the Legal Alliance for Reproductive Rights (LARR) is a group of 70+ law firms, working with the Bar Association of San Francisco and the San Francisco City Attorney’s office, providing pro bono legal assistance for individuals, health providers, and organizations impacted by legislation that criminalizes or subjects people up to civil litigation for seeking and facilitating access to reproductive care including abortion in different states.

What is your role – can you refer prospective clients to LARR?

Yes. We need your support to connect people and organizations in need of legal assistance to LARR.

What kinds of cases does LARR assist with?

LARR may be able to provide:

  • Legal advice on whether seeking out, supporting, or providing abortion services violates the laws in various states
  • Legal advice on data privacy and assistance responding to summonses
  • Representation in civil litigation
  • Criminal defense representation
  • Representation in Child Protective Services proceedings
  • Legal research and amicus briefs for reproductive justice organizations

Are services restricted to San Francisco or California clients?

No. LARR members include law firms with offices in multiple states. We may be able to connect clients out of state with one of our member firms or refer to another coalition doing similar work in a different region.

Are referrals confidential?

Yes, conversations between a prospective client and a lawyer referral service such as LARR are protected and kept confidential under California law.

Are the services free?

Yes. LARR was formed in the public interest to increase access to legal advice and representation for individuals, health providers, and organizations affected by criminal or civil measures burdening or banning abortion and other forms of reproductive care. LARR also assists those charged with criminal offenses for pregnancy outcomes deemed the result of reckless or negligent conduct during pregnancy. The participating law firms are committed to providing pro bono services.

How does the referral process work?

We ask that you have the prospective client contact us directly by email at LARR@sfbar.org or by phone at 415-875-7076 to provide a general description of the legal issue. We then endeavor to match the prospective client with a suitable law firm.
