BASF and JDC Remember the Life and Work of Eviction Defense Collaborative Executive Director Daniel Casanova

Thursday, July 10, 2025

San Francisco, CA - The Bar Association of San Francisco and its Justice & Diversity Center were saddened by the sudden passing of Eviction Defense Collaborative Executive Director Daniel Casanova. We are lucky to have known Daniel, and are inspired by his work and commitment to some of the most vulnerable members of our community.

At EDC, Daniel collaborated with JDC’s Homeless Advocacy Project and is remembered as a supportive colleague and warm friend. We are proud to have worked with Daniel and all of EDC in partnership with many legal aid organizations on the Tenant Right to Counsel program, which has helped hundreds of San Franciscans stay in their homes, ensure they had the legal support they needed, and find justice.

Yolanda Jackson, Executive Director and General Counsel for the Bar Association of San Francisco and Justice & Diversity Center, remembered Daniel for his creativity and determination. “I had the great pleasure of meeting Daniel for the first time in a one-on-one strategy meeting. What I remember and appreciated most about him is his candor, his very pleasant sense of humor, and how incredibly smart he was. He was a true problem solver who did not back down from challenges. He was a strong leader of the Eviction Defense Collaborative group, and JDC valued his leadership. He understood our collective goals in the eviction defense space. Daniel will be missed in our tightly-knit legal services community in San Francisco. May he rest well.”

We join the chorus of tributes and remembrances of gratitude for the life and work of Daniel, and share our deepest condolences to his family and friends.
