On February 1st, the Spring 2023 Bar Association of San Francisco (BASF) Basketball League tipped off for the first time since 2016. Hosted at the “Lowest Court in the Land” at UC Law SF, the league is open to lawyers, firm staff, expert witnesses, law students, and other BASF members. Six teams competed in the spring season to play, promote wellness, connect, and have some fun, with team names like “Play like a MOFO” and “Gibson DUNK & Crutcher”. The happy hour at Executive Order Bar and Lounge provided another opportunity to connect after games as well.

The 10-week season allows for plenty of gameplay and opportunities to work on ball handling, shooting, and refining arguments with referees. Players mentioned that the long season also provided the opportunity for greater team cohesion and further developed a team flow that has been the driving force behind so many championships for the Golden State Warriors.

MPBF of Murphy Pearson Bradley & Feeney came into the playoffs as the top seed and beat Farella from Farella Braun to punch their ticket to the championship. The Free Agents, a collection of players from different firms sponsored by Zacks, Freedman & Patterson, bested Morgan Lewis to claim their spot in the finals.

The BASF Basketball League Championship competition was fierce between MPBF and the Free Agents with fast ball movement and teams trading 3-point shots like an after practice competition between Steph Curry and Klay Thompson. MPBF jumped out to a lead, but the Free Agents came within 2 points at the half. Both sides put out an intense effort, but in the last few minutes, MPBF pulled away to take home the championship trophy.
