On January 17, the Art Law section—BASF’s newest section—hosted its inaugural event, a tour and reception at the UNTITLED, ART fair. The event was attended by over 70 registrants who enjoyed cocktails sponsored by Deutsche Bank and a privately guided tour of the art fair, led by the exceptionally well-versed Kamal Zargar, UNTITLED, ART’s director of strategic development. The tour closed with a performance by Bay Area artist and musician, Mike Henderson, whose work is included in the world-renowned exhibition currently at the de Young museum, Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power.

The UNTITLED, ART fair is in its fourth year in the Bay Area, and is an off-shoot of a Miami art fair of the same name. This year’s show boasted over 60 exhibitors from solo artists to internationally renowned galleries. Some highlights included expressive figurative sculpture by the late Bay Area artist Stephen De Staebler, exhibited by the Dolby Chadwick Gallery, and emotive abstract pieces by contemporary artist Stella Zhang, exhibited by the Chinese Cultural Center of San Francisco.

The Art Law section explores and discusses legal issues and developments related to fine arts and antiquities in commercial and nonprofit spaces. The section draws upon the perspectives of collectors, artists, galleries, museums, auction houses, art advisors and appraisers in understanding and analyzing art-related legal issues.
