The Bar Association of San Francisco is a nonprofit organization and the oldest voluntary bar association in California. Today, over 7,400 San Francisco lawyers are members of BASF, which prides itself as being one of the most active and innovative local bar associations. In addition to services and benefits to our members, BASF provides a variety of legal services to San Francisco residents including our Lawyer Referral and Information Service, Alternative Dispute Resolution, and the Justice & Diversity Center (including the Homeless Advocacy Project) which is the largest provider of legal services to San Franciscans.
About the Justice and Diversity Center of BASF:
JDC is a non-profit organization that provides free legal services through its staff and volunteers to low-income Bay Area residents. Each year more than 1,600 volunteer attorneys, legal assistants, and law students work with JDC staff to serve nearly 7,500 indigent clients. JDC’s holistic advocacy approach seeks to address the social service and legal needs of clients.
About the Job:
The Paralegal will work for JDC’s Sargent Shriver Child Custody Project (SASH), reporting to the Supervising and Staff Attorneys. This is a full-time position and the Paralegal will work, at the SASH office at the San Francisco Superior Court in San Francisco (400 McAllister St.) and at JDC’s main office at 301 Battery Street. The SASH Project assists low-income people through staff attorneys and Social Services Advocate at SASH Offices providing information and guidance through child custody and visitation cases.
The Coordinator’s primary responsibilities will include communication with litigants and the court staff, screening litigants for services eligibility, case management, preparing filings, maintaining databases, and project outreach at calendar calls.
The successful candidate will have the following:
|EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE|
- Bachelor’s Degree or an equivalent combination of relevant education, training, and expertise sufficient to perform the essential duties of the position.
- 2-3 years of experience in family law practice preferred
- Bilingual language skills preferred, particularly Spanish
|SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS|
- Extremely well-organized, efficient, self-motivated, creative, and able to work independently with minimal supervision and instruction
- Must have strong time management skills
- Must have excellent written and oral communication skills
- Experience interacting professionally with a broad range of people including low-income litigants, attorneys, and court staff
- Must be computer literate (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Access preferred) and able to learn new programs
