Michael Tobriner has practiced family law in the San Francisco Bay Area for over thirty years, including ten years' experience as a family law mediator and as counsel in collaborative divorce proceedings.

As a family law mediator Tobriner uses a goals and interests-based approach designed to assist parties in identifying and resolving the problems their particular situation presents. In mediation, he guides the parties in working out for themselves the highest and best outcomes for the family.

As mediator Tobriner treats all parties with respect and asks the parties to respect each other. He has mediated both complex, high-asset matters and cases involving more limited resources. He has experience in mediating contentious, high-conflict situations.

Tobriner has extensive training in family law mediation and collaborative practice. He has served as a Settlement Conference Judge in the Family Law Departments of the Superior Courts of San Francisco and Marin Counties and as a Temporary Judge on the family law court calendar in San Francisco. He is a member of Collaborative Practice San Francisco and of the International Association of Collaborative Professionals.

Tobriner is a Certified Family Law Specialist through the State Bar of California and a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. He is a member of the Family Law Sections of the State Bar of California and the Bar Association of San Francisco. He has served for many years as a panelist for continuing legal education programs in family law. He has taught courses in community property and family law as an adjunct professor at Hastings College of Law and the University of San Francisco School of Law. Tobriner holds a J.D. from Harvard University and a B.A. and M.A. from Stanford.
