VLSP Participates in National Pro Bono Week
By Andrea Fitanides, VLSP Pro Bono Manager
VLSP participated in the first annual National Pro Bono Celebration this October 25-31. The week-long celebration, sponsored by the ABA Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service, was a national cohesive effort to address the continuing need for pro bono services in light of current economic times. The goals for the celebration included: (1) recognizing the pro bono efforts of America’s lawyers, (2) recruiting more pro bono volunteers, and (3) mobilizing community support for pro bono.
VLSP was involved in a series of events in honor of the national celebration. On October 26, 2009, VLSP participated in the Bay Area Pro Bono Service Providers Summit held at the State Bar of California. On October 27, BASF’s Barristers Club Pro Bono Issues and Community Service Committee released its 2010 Pro Bono Resource Guide for Bay Area Attorneys with a reception in San Francisco, while VLSP participated in pro bono panels at Golden Gate University School of Law and at University of San Francisco School of Law. On October 28, VLSP staff and volunteers participated in Project Homeless Connect, where they helped over 300 clients obtain California Identification Cards, and assisted almost 200 clients with various legal issues.
Finally, on October 29, VLSP participated in the Pro Bono Reception and Fair held at the Administrative Office of the Courts in San Francisco. The fair was open to law students, attorneys, and pro bono coordinators students and featured a presentation by the Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court, the honorable Ronald George.
