Volunteer Legal Service Program (VLSP)
February Volunteer Spotlight: Jennifer Kim Letulle
By Nicholas Baran, VLSP Supervising Attorney for Family Law
VLSP is pleased to recognize Jennifer Kim Letulle as our volunteer of the month. Jennifer has been volunteering for VLSP’s Family Law Project since 2003, the same year she was admitted to the bar in California. The project assists low-income clients with family law issues such as divorce, custody of children, and domestic violence.
Jennifer graduated from UC Berkeley and went on to attend Villanova School of Law in Pennsylvania. She also holds a Master’s Degree in Urban Planning and is interested in community economic development. Jennifer practices general civil litigation at Rankin, Sproat, Mires, Beaty & Reynolds in Oakland.
After taking an MCLE class at BASF in 2003, Jennifer learned about VLSP and decided to attend its Introduction to Family Law training. Since that time, Jennifer has assisted clients in 15 pro bono cases and has been one of VLSP’s most reliable and loyal supporters, always willing to step in and take cases on short notice. Among those, Jennifer has successfully represented clients in several difficult custody cases, some of which involved domestic violence. She recently took on a difficult custody case with only one week’s notice before the first hearing.
Jennifer says, “Volunteer work is an important part of my life. The most challenging aspect of working as a volunteer family law attorney is cases that involve child custody and child support payments. These cases involve a lot of emotion from both ends and require a great deal of patience and tenacity to reach a positive resolution.”
Jennifer enjoys spending time with her husband and 22-month old son, and traveling when she gets the chance. Recent travels have included hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru, Ireland, and Australia. Jennifer also loves cooking and “exploring the fabulous restaurants of San Francisco” She is a big fan of her hometown Los Angeles Lakers and the California Golden Bears.
