VLSP's Housing Negotiation Project is a limited-scope project providing representation to individuals and families facing eviction. Representation is limited to settlement conferences only. HNP is the first pro bono project of its kind, and is a project in which every single person in need of representation has a pro bono attorney. Volunteer shifts are Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 12:30 - 4:30 p.m. During one shift, a volunteer will represent one to three clients. It is an excellent opportunity to get valuable negotiation experience without a large time commitment. Volunteers must attend our free CLE training before volunteering for this project. After attending the training, we ask our volunteers commit to 4 afternoon sessions within 6 months.

Neuroscience, Decision-Making, Implicit Bias and Intent in Legal Practice

The Equal Justice Society and The Bar Association of San Francisco (BASF) invite you to a special presentation on the implication of neuroscience, psychology and implicit association in the analysis of fairness in trial room decision-making.

This program has been approved for one hour of Elimination of Bias MCLE credit by the State Bar of California.

One of our nationally recognized instructors, Kimberly Papillon, has extensive experience in training attorneys, judges and courtroom personnel on issues of racial and ethnic fairness. She has taught through California's Administrative Office of the Courts, National Judicial College, and other institutions within the legal profession.

Participants will explore emerging research in neuroscience showing how we assess and react to one another. Brain imaging and decision-making studies will be used to explain how we determine intelligence, threat, competence and collegiality in a diverse society.

The presentation will identify ways to increase fairness guided by science. The effects of the legal framework of the Fourteenth Amendment on implicit bias will be discussed. The topics of inclusion and retention will be used to demonstrate how the principles of eliminating implicit bias and altering decision-making can be implemented in the day-to-day practices of attorneys.

Attorneys will learn how social science concepts such as implicit bias, structural racism, and institutional bias are used in current litigation. Attorneys will also learn about the development of bias in trial room decision-making, the effects that such bias has on attorneys, colleagues, and clients, and steps to debias.

At the end of the 60-minute MCLE discussion, participants will be able to engage in discussion and/or questions.

Our Family Law Project assists individuals, families with children or families with domestic violence in matters including marital dissolutions, child custody, child support, restraining orders, guardianships, conservatorships, wills, powers of attorney and probate litigation. This is a full-scope project in which the volunteer can take the case from start to finish. Depending on the circumstances of each case, cases can last for weeks, months or even years. Before you volunteer with this project, we ask that you attend this free MCLE training session.

This training will be given by VLSP’s Supervising Attorneys who will go over the volunteer procedures as well as the forms for completing a simple divorce. Bijal Vakil is a leader in the South Asian and Asian American communities in the Bay Area and around the country. He currently serves on the Board of Governors for the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (former Regional Governor and Secretary), the Strategic Advisory Council for the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Silicon Valley (former President) and the President of the Asian Law Alliance. He is the recipient of the 2010 Minority Bar Association’s Unity award. In addition, he serves on the Endorsements Committee for the National South Asian Bar Association. The National Asian Pacific American Bar Association named him as a Top 20 Under 40 Lawyer in 2010. Bijal is also a Lawyer Representative for the Northern District of California. Bijal is Executive Partner at White & Case LLP’s Silicon Valley Office, and chairs its Taiwan Country Practice Group. He also sits on his Firm’s Diversity and Pro Bono committees.

David Tsai has made significant contributions to the LGBT and Asian American communities in the Bay Area. He currently serves on the Asian American Bar Association Board of Directors and has previously served as the Diversity Director of the BASF Barristers Club and chaired Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom, the Minority Bar Coalition, and the ABA LGBT Litigator Committee. He was named 2011 National LGBT Bar Association Best Under 40 and 2010 Santa Clara County Bar Association Barrister of the Year. David has successfully represented LGBT and HIV+ clients in pro bono immigration cases with the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights, Asian Law Caucus, National Center for Lesbian Rights, and Asian Pacific Islander Legal Outreach. David is an attorney at Perkins Coie LLP’s San Francisco office and focuses on intellectual property cases.

Homeless Advocacy Project Service Day: HAP Clothing Drive

Volunteers will have the opportunity to assist clients of VLSP's Homeless Advocacy Project (HAP), which provides legal and advocacy services, with supporting social services, to the City's most vulnerable individuals and families. In addition to getting to know the HAP staff and clients, the Service Day will focus on a clothing drive for HAP’s clients.

HAP is VLSP’s largest individual project, serving over 1500 clients per year through the work of staff attorneys, legal and SSI advocates, social workers, student interns, and volunteer legal and social service professionals.

As the FBI's general counsel has admitted, the Supreme Court's decision in United States v. Jones represented a "sea change" in the law. This CLE examines the ongoing struggle court's are facing in attempting to fit new technologies within the contours of the Fourth Amendment. We will review recent cases applying the Fourth Amendment to technologies like email, tweets and cell phone location data, discuss the three wildly different opinions in Jones, and examine how Jones signals the beginning of a new line of Fourth Amendment challenges to electronic searches and seizures.

Third Annual Charity Golf Tournament benefiting BASF's Diversity Pipeline Programs.

The tournament will be held on October 5, 2012, from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m at Harding Park Golf Course in San Francisco.

This event will give attorneys a chance to spend an entire afternoon golfing and networking, all while benefiting youth, undergraduates, and law school students who participate in BASF's Pipeline Programs. It is our goal to place at least one general counsel, in-house counsel, or judge on each team. Participants will enjoy food, drinks, prizes, and exciting golf contests.

All the golf tournament proceeds will be used to support BASF's Diversity Pipeline Programs, which were created to help diversify the legal profession by encouraging and assisting underserved and diverse students to advance along the educational pipeline from K-12th grade, to college, through law school, during law practice, and all the way up to the bench.
