Sharmin BockSharmin Bock

Occidental College, Cum Laude, Philosophy and Political Theory, 1984.

Georgetown University Law Center, Cum Laude, 1988.

Admitted to the California State Bar on June 6, 1989.

Prior to graduating from law school, I worked for the San Francisco law firms of Pillsbury, Madison and Sutro, and Bronson, Bronson and McKinnon, as well as the United States Department of Justice, in Washington D.C., in their Environmental Enforcement Section.

After graduating from law school, I returned to San Francisco and served as a Law Clerk for the Honorable D. Lowell Jensen, United States District Court, Northern District of California.

In 1989, I joined the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, and I’ve dedicated the last 22 years to fighting to protect the underserved and underrepresented, and prosecuting crimes against women and children. I’m a national leader in combating child sex trafficking, a rapidly growing epidemic in Bay Area, as well as an expert in solving cold cases with DNA, a challenge facing our city’s crime lab. Appearing in court on over one thousand cases on behalf of the People of California, I have achieved a 95% conviction rate in felony cases brought to trial.

In 2009, I received the prestigious Fay Stender Award from the California Woman Lawyers, never before given to a prosecutor. This annual award is given to an attorney who, like Fay Stender, “is committed to the representation of women, disadvantaged groups and unpopular causes, and whose courage, zest for life and demonstrated ability to effect change as a single individual make her a role model for women attorneys.” I was also honored be named California’s 16th Assembly District’s Women of the Year in 2010.

I’m running for District Attorney because San Francisco deserves the choice of an independent and experienced prosecutor as our next District Attorney.

Being a District Attorney is not just a management job and not a job for someone with just a law degree.  On top of my courtroom experience, I’m an experienced manager of top attorneys and DA units including Special Operations, DNA/Cold Cases and Public Integrity.

I’m also a 40-year San Francisco resident, an immigrant, and a Mom. My teenage daughter wants to walk home from school. I want her to get there safely.  As District Attorney, I will keep San Franciscans and their families safe from violent crime, protect civil rights, and implement reforms that break the cycle of incarceration.

With our criminal justice system in crisis -- hundreds of cases mishandled and dismissed, a shocking drop in misdemeanor conviction rates, crime lab scandal, prison realignment – San Francisco needs a professional, not a political appointee, as our next District Attorney.
