U.S. District Judge William H. Alsup Honored by The Bar Association of San Francisco’s Barristers Club at 29th Annual Judges Reception

July 26, 2013– San Francisco -- The Barristers Club of The Bar Association of San Francisco presented its Tara L. Riedley Barristers Choice Award at the 29th Annual Judges Reception on July 25, 2013, to the Honorable William H. Alsup of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. This award is given each year to one judge serving in San Francisco to recognize his or her extraordinary efforts to educate and encourage young lawyers that are new to the practice of law and the courtroom. In addition, the award recognizes work done outside the courtroom in support of programs of the Barristers Club.

More than 300 members of the legal community, including fifty state and federal judges and their clerks, attended the Judges Reception which was held at UC Hastings College of the Law.

Judge Alsup is a well-respected jurist and his promotion of junior attorneys in the courtroom is unparalleled. Judge Alsup frequently requests that young attorneys play a prominent role, writing that he “strongly encourage[s] lead counsel to permit young lawyers to examine witnesses at trial.” Judge Alsup’s standing order specifically provides that he will grant a hearing if a written request is filed “stating that a lawyer of four or fewer years out of law school will conduct the oral argument . . ., believing that young lawyers need more opportunities for appearances than they usually receive.” Judge Alsup has inspired other jurists throughout the country to adopt similar orders.

He is also an active supporter of junior attorneys outside the courtroom through his continued mentorship of his clerks and involvement in The Bar Association of San Francisco’s Mock Trial program.

The Barristers Club is proud to recognize Judge Alsup’s commitment to the development of young attorneys, and his passion and dedication to serving the community.

Proceeds from the Judges Reception help the Barristers Club expand its efforts to serve the community through volunteering, mentoring of Bay Area students and increasing diversity in the legal profession.
