The Bar Association of San Francisco and its Justice & Diversity Center Celebrate Thousands of Dedicated Volunteers During National Volunteer Week

April 22, 2013 – San Francisco -- In honor of National Volunteer Week, April 21- 27, 2013, The Bar Association of San Francisco (BASF) and its Justice & Diversity Center (JDC) have launched a weeklong social media campaign to recognize the efforts of its volunteers who assist the public and the legal community through pro bono legal services, mentoring of K-12 students, organizing legal education, and serving in leadership positions on boards and committees.

National Volunteer Week: April 21-27, 2013

In 2012 alone, the Legal Services Program of the Justice & Diversity Center (JDC) utilized more than 2,090 volunteers, including 1,678 attorneys, 150 paralegals and 262 law students who donated over 50,000 hours of their time.

Every year, JDC’s Diversity Educational Program utilizes more than 120 volunteers to help with its Destination Law School, Law Academy, School-To-College, Mock Trial, Lawyers in the Schools and Day in Court programs.

BASF and its Barristers Club for young attorneys have more than 60 sections and committees, each with a volunteer chair and/or vice chair. These volunteers organize the more than 200 continuing legal education programs that the association puts on every year.

The BASF, Barristers Club and JDC boards consist of more than 50 attorneys who volunteer their time to serve in leadership positions which oversee the operations of the association. In addition to the boards, the BASF president also appoints volunteers to serve as special committee members. To highlight a few, these committees oversee finance and audit operations; evaluate candidates seeking appointments as judges within California; research and author amicus curiae; and work with the community on criminal justice issues within San Francisco.

Both the monthly BASF Bulletin newspaper and the quarterly San Francisco Attorney magazine rely on volunteer contributors. These volunteer contributors author articles on recent cases, practice area news and the latest trends in the legal industry.

The Volunteer Appreciation campaign is being launched on BASF’s page on Facebook (www.facebook.com/sfbar), its LinkedIn company page (http://www.linkedin.com/company/the-bar-association-of-san-francisco) and through its Twitter feed (www.twitter.com/sfbar).

Established in 1974, National Volunteer Week focuses national attention on the impact and power of volunteerism and service as an integral aspect of our civic leadership. The week draws the support and endorsement of the president and Congress, governors, mayors and municipal leaders, as well as corporate and community groups across the country.
