Statement from The Bar Association of San Francisco President Kelly Dermody Regarding President Obama's Announcement About Same-Sex Marriage

May 9, 2012 - Today President Barack Obama became the first sitting United States President to endorse same-sex marriage.  Speaking on behalf of the 7,500 members of The Bar Association of San Francisco (BASF), we are proud of our President for recognizing and honoring the basic principles of equality upon which our country was founded.  Standing up for what is right is not always popular, so we applaud the President for having the courage to ignore politics. We were proud when the president repudiated the Defense of Marriage Act, and we stand in strong alliance with the President now.

The Bar Association of San Francisco will continue to lead and support efforts for the full civil rights of all lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. We are honored to stand with the LGBT community in its important struggle to restore legalized same-sex marriage in California, and we hope that President Obama's endorsement today will help to break down the final barriers to marriage equality in our state and across the country.

Kelly Dermody

BASF President
