October is Domestic Violence Aware Month: Volunteer to Help End the Violence

October 1, 2009 -- San Francisco
-- Domestic Violence Awareness Month is a national movement aimed at bringing domestic violence to the forefront of public awareness. Countless advocacy and healthcare organizations on the local, state and federal levels devote the month of October to public education campaigns, awareness activities, and fundraisers in an effort to strengthen victims’ rights and eliminate domestic violence.

Domestic violence is an epidemic that afflicts every community, primarily victimizing women and children, irrespective of age, race, culture, socioeconomic or educational level. In addition to physical abuse, victims can suffer sexual and emotional abuse, intimidation, economic dependence on their batterer and isolation from society in a cycle of degradation.

Of the cases handled by volunteer attorneys in VLSP’s Family Law Project, about 75 percent involve domestic violence. We apply a holistic approach towards our clients’ cases by working to resolve outstanding legal issues while helping connect clients to therapists, social services agencies and housing resources. We are dedicated to meeting each individual’s legal needs and to transforming families by helping to end the cycle of abuse.

Please email vlsp@sfbar.org for more information about volunteering.
