Barristers Club Honors Judge Marla Miller at 25th Annual Judges Reception

July 23, 2009 -- San Francisco -- The Barristers Club of The Bar Association of San Francisco presented its Tara L. Riedley Barristers Choice Award at its 25th annual Judges Reception on July 22 to San Francisco Superior Court Judge Marla Miller. The award, voted on by the Barristers Board of Directors, is given to recognize a jurist who has made extraordinary efforts to educate and encourage lawyers new to the courtroom. The award was renamed this year in honor of Tara Riedley, 2008 Barrister of the Year and Chair of the Judges Reception Committee, who passed away in August 2008.

In addition to her mentoring of young lawyers in her courtroom, Judge Miller was instrumental in helping the Barristers Club expand the San Francisco Mock Trial Program and she has served as a judge for the program.  She also participated in developing curriculum and materials for the Law Academy Summer Institute.

Prior to joining the bench in 2005, Miller was a partner at Morrison & Foerster where she specialized in complex civil litigation, including intellectual property. She is a former president of the San Francisco Woman Lawyers Alliance. She also served on the BASF Board in 2005 before being appointed by Governor Schwarzenegger to San Francisco Superior Court.

More than 250 members of the legal community, including more than fifty state and federal judges and their clerks, attended the Judges Reception  which was held in the Green Room of the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center.  Also attending to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the reception were prior Barrister Choice Award winners including,  Honorable Alfred G. Chiantelli,  (Ret.) ADR Services; Honorable  David Garcia (Ret.), JAMS; Honorable James McBride, Presiding Judge, San Francisco Superior Court; Honorable Robert Dondero, San Francisco Superior Court; Honorable James L. Warren (Ret.) JAMS; and Honorable David Ballati, (Ret.)

The funds raised from this event help support Barristers Club programs that encourage mentoring of Bay Area students, increasing diversity in the legal profession and helping law students bridge the gap between school and practicing law.
