The Bar Association of San Francisco Names New Executive Director

January 30, 2007 - San Francisco - The Board of Directors of The Bar Association of San Francisco announced today the hiring of its new Executive Director, Daniel W. Burkhardt, currently BASF's acting executive director and general counsel.

In announcing the board's decision, BASF President Nanci Clarence, partner of Clarence & Dyer LLP said, "Dan Burkhardt brings experience, judgment and keen intellect to the leadership of BASF.  He has tremendous organizational skills and is a champion of everything BASF stands for, including equal access to justice, delivering legal services to the disadvantaged and diversity. As an openly gay man heading a major metropolitan bar association, Dan will be opening doors to the leadership of our profession for all historically disadvantaged groups."

This announcement culminates a nationwide search and an exhaustive interview process conducted by the BASF 17-person search committee representing all facets of the association. The executive director leads the implementation of projects furthering the mission of the organization including a commitment to diversity, the achievement of equal access to justice, leadership on social issues, attorney professionalism, and pro bono service.

Burkhardt has been with BASF since the fall of 2003 when he was brought on as Deputy Director and Chief Operations Officer. Since May 2006, Burkhardt has been acting director and general counsel overseeing BASF operations and working directly with the managers of every department and program. He was instrumental in the selection of new office space for the 100-person organization. BASF is scheduled to move into the Bently Reserve, formally known as the Old Federal Reserve Building, in May 2007.

Clarence continued, "It is hard to conjure a more steady, hardworking and committed leader than Dan.  He has steadied our ship over these past months and has proven that our organization is ready to move to the next level under his leadership."

Burkhardt is a former associate of McCutchen, Doyle, Brown & Enersen (now Bingham McCutchen) and served seven years in the White House, ultimately as a Deputy Assistant to the President.

Prior to joining BASF, he consulted for AIDS Project Los Angeles. Burkhardt earned his business degree from the University of California at Berkeley and his J.D. from UC Berkeley's Boalt Hall School of Law, where he was Senior Note and Comment Editor of the California Law Review .
