BASF Names Executive Director of its Volunteer Legal Services Program

VLSP Managing Attorney Tiela Chalmers Elevated to Position After Serving as Acting Director

September 28, 2006 - San Francisco - The Bar Association of San Francisco announced the promotion of Tiela Chalmers to Executive Director of its Volunteer Legal Services Program (VLSP). Chalmers has served in the capacity of Acting Director of VLSP since the death of longtime VLSP Director Tanya Neiman in February.

Chalmers joined VLSP in 1997 as the Supervising Attorney for its Landlord/Tenant project and the intake staff, and was promoted to Managing Attorney in 2000.  Prior to joining VLSP, Chalmers was a litigator with Farella, Braun + Martel for ten years, where she practiced general business litigation, including construction, securities and insurance litigation, and did pro bono work in the areas of landlord/tenant, immigration, family, probate and impact litigation.  She serves on the board of the Eviction Defense Collaborative, and is a past president of her synagogue, Congregation Sha'ar Zahav.

As executive director of VLSP, the largest provider of legal services in San Francisco, Chalmers responsibilities include Program oversight and management, fund development, and directing a staff of 35. She looks forward to carrying on Neiman's legacy of innovation and of collaborative approaches to serving the needs of underserved San Franciscans. Chalmers received her J.D. from UC Hastings College of the Law, and her undergraduate degree in history from Swarthmore College.

BASF's award winning and nationally recognized Volunteer Legal Services Program serves nearly 20,000 clients each year together with BASF's Lawyer Referral and Information Service (LRIS). VLSP's volunteers contribute close to ten million dollars in pro bono hours per year.
