LGBT Related Reports and Employer Resources
In late 2007, BASF's Equality Subcommittee on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Issues put together a report of best practices focused on the hiring, retention and promotion of LGBT attorneys.
In 2006, the State Bar of California issued a report on challenges in the practice of law for attorneys from diverse backgrounds. The report includes a section on LGBT attorneys and summarizes the result of an online poll conducted in 2006. The section on LGBT attorneys also discusses responses from transgender attorneys. Additionally, in 2007, the State Bar's Center for Access and Fairness produced a brochure designed to provide model practices for legal employers to follow in promoting a nondiscriminatory workplace for employees who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or transgender.
In an effort to continue BASF’s commitment to encourage diversity in the legal profession, BASF presented a Report on Employment Policies for Gay and Lesbian Attorneys in 1996. This report addressed model policies on sexual harassment, as well as the issue of discrimination against gay and lesbian attorneys who are neither necessarily self-identified, nor otherwise known to other members of their firms.
In addition to these reports, BASF also put together a guide for legal employers in 1991. The report is a comprehensive guide, addressing antidiscrimination policies, recruitment and hiring issues, retention, advancement and compensation, and employee benefits. It contains recommended steps in all these areas.
