The Justice & Diversity Center
Diversity Initiatives Overview
The Bar Association of San Francisco (BASF) has served as a national leader in efforts to achieve equal opportunity in the legal profession for:
- Racial and ethnic minorities
- Gay men, lesbians, bisexual and transgendered attorneys
- Lawyers with disabilities
A pivotal 1987 study, commissioned by the University of California, discovered "profound disadvantages within the city's legal workplaces."
Acting upon this report, the BASF Board of Directors adopted our Goals and Timetables for Minority Hiring and Advancement. These goals and timetables have become the cornerstone of our diversity efforts over the past 20 years, and have lead to the establishment of numerous diversity programs within our organization.

BASF members are invited to join the BASF Diversity Listserv to stay up-to-date on news and upcoming events as well as to share ideas and information on diversity issues that affect the legal community.
