School-To-College Program

Additional Components

In addition to offering 9-12th grade core curriculum and educational opportunities, STC provides supplementary components that provide a tailor-made approach for the needs of individual groups and students.

The Lunch Bunch consists of 25-30 sophomore students who are making the transition from standard classes to honor level classes. Weekly lunch meetings are conducted by the STC coordinator to facilitate the students' academic success. Topics include: how to obtain tutoring, effective study habits, scholarships, summer opportunities, and internships.

Lunch Informational Sessions are open to STC students as well as to the entire Balboa High School student body. Students are invited to hear representatives from colleges and scholarship programs speak, and they are also given the opportunity to learn about summer and volunteer opportunities. Lunch informational sessions allow students who have after-school commitments such as jobs, athletic commitments, and night school to participate in the STC program. Lunch informational sessions are conducted four to six times a month.

Drop-in Academic Advising is now available to students throughout the school day, Monday-Thursday 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.. The STC coordinator is available to help 9-12th grade students stay informed about high school graduation requirements. The coordinator assists students in enrolling in the correct high school courses and other requirements that will prepare them for college. The STC coordinator also acts as an educational advisor and provides a general overview of the different types of colleges and their admission requirements, as well as information on and assistance with college entrance exams (SAT I, II and ACT).

AB540 Undocumented Immigrant Student Support Group has been developed by the STC coordinator to help undocumented students navigate the college application process. Many undocumented students at Balboa High School remain unaware of the AB540 law-guaranteeing qualifying undocumented students in-state tuition at public colleges and universities-as well as the rights and opportunities available to them. The support group was implemented to offer students a safe, supportive environment to explore what options they have in higher education. The group discusses the history of the relevant legislation, immigration definitions and resources, important information about applying for college, and tips on a successful college experience including funding their education.

Partnership with Local City College of San Francisco. In an effort to continue providing college outreach services to low-income, first-generation college students and students behind academically, we are partnering with retention and outreach service programs. Working with these programs, STC has developed an educational plan that will include placement test prep workshops on the Balboa campus, orientation sessions on the college campus, counseling sessions with college representatives, and college entrance application and financial aid application assistance. This program is designed to ensure that the students achieve their academic goals in a timely manner.

School-To-College Summer Component. We conducted four intensive college preparatory sessions this summer. Students going in to their senior year get an early start in preparing for the fall admissions process and college experience. The curriculum included personal statement writing, advice on completing every part of the admissions application, including how to approach extracurricular activities, short answers, and essays, as well as how to balance the different elements for a strong overall application. The sessions also covered study skills necessary for college, such as time management, course/major selection, note taking, and critical reading.

National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Student Eligibility Workshops. STC is collaborating with the guidance counselors and athletic department to identify student athletics in grades 10-12th with the goal of ensuring these students attend college and take advantage of any athletic scholarships available.
