School-To-College Program

Sophomore Component

The sophomore component involves helping the students explore their possible career paths, identifying obstacles they may face and discussion of their ethnic background.

Summary:

  • Attend an orientation session that is held prior to the first class meeting to describe the program, familiarize mentors with Balboa High School, update them with the college application process, review the program syllabus and inform them on various materials and resources available to them.
  • Two orientations sessions will be held: Monday, February 4 from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. or Thursday, February 7 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.
  • Possibly attend a meeting with student, parent, STC coordinator, and Balboa administration to discuss obstacles and the future goals of student.
  • Beginning February 4 and running through May 27, attend the weekly STC sessions every Tuesday from 3: 30 - 4:45 pm (subject to change) at Balboa High School in the Excelsior district of San Francisco. The class is divided into lecture/discussion and one-on-one time with the students.
  • Mentors are assigned 1-2 students each to help them on their STC class assignments, further discussion regarding lecture, exploration of career options, and give moral support.
  • Form a relationship with the students such that you can advise, coach and encourage them throughout the STC classes and planning positive short and long-range goals. A great way to keep in contact with students is through email or phone, so plan on obtaining the students email addresses and set aside some time communicating with them during the week.
  • Willingness to spend time outside class to educate self on your mentee's career interests.
  • Mentors also can help instruct classes and chaperone field trips. Mentors share in the responsibilities and covering for other mentors when work conflicts arise.
