School of the Arts Advances to 2011 State Mock Trial Competition

The 2011 mock trial program and competition did not disappoint. Seven teams of high school students and more than 100 attorneys and judges worked for several months leading up to the competition in February. On February 24th Balboa High School and the School of the Arts (SOTA) competed in the final round. After an impressive contest, SOTA emerged as the victor and will represent San Francisco in a state competition in March. The program is administered by BASF’s Barristers Club and diversity department.

Next year the committee intends to add new teams from low-performing high schools in San Francisco. We will need volunteers to help coach these new students. And if you think that this contest is memorable to just the veteran schools; think again. The 2011 season added The College Track Program, a community based organization in the Bay View Hunters Point district of San Francisco.

If you would like to join the mock trial program and make a difference in the life of student at an underperforming high school, contact Jayne Salinger at jsalinger@sfbar.org.
