Diversity Programs Commitment to Diversity

The Bar Association of San Francisco (BASF) has served as a national leader in efforts to achieve equal opportunity in the legal profession for:

  • Women
  • Racial and ethnic minorities
  • Gay men, lesbians, bisexual and transgendered attorneys
  • Lawyers with disabilities

A pivotal 1987 study, commissioned by the University of California, discovered "profound disadvantages within the city's legal workplaces."

Acting upon this report, the BASF Board of Directors adopted our Goals and Timetables for Minority Hiring and Advancement. These goals and timetables have become the cornerstone of our diversity efforts over the past 20 years, and have lead to the establishment of numerous diversity programs within our organization.

2010 Bottom Line Diversity Task Force Report and Conference

In 2010 BASF formed the Bottom Line Partnership Task Force to go beyond the statistics and study the state of diversity in our legal community by focusing on minority partners within San Francisco law firms. The task force spent the several months interviewing minority partners, in-house counsel and managing partners in an effort to determine keys to success for those who have made partner. This report contains narratives from the interviews and has written summaries and recommendations. BASF is grateful to our sponsors, those who conducted and participated in interviews for this project, and the members and chairs of the Bottom Line Partnership Task Force.
