In April 2005, BASF President James Finberg appointed a twelve-member task force to examine the issue of how best to encourage lawyers and law firms to provide financial support to non-profit organizations in general and legal-service non-profits in particular.

This Charitable Giving Task Force, working closely with the BASF Development Department, engaged two graduate students at U.C. Berkeley’s Goldman School of Public Policy to design and conduct a survey of San Francisco law firms.

The task force concluded that law firms have a special obligation to support non-profit legal service organizations that are providing essential services and advocating policy issues that are important to society. Firms and lawyers would take a very large step toward fulfilling their responsibility if every law firm in the Bay Area were to contribute one percent of its net income to non-profit organizations, with the bulk of those contributions being directed to legal-service and advocacy organizations.

On August 16 the BASF Board approved a resolution encouraging San Francisco law firms to contribute at least 1% of total partner compensation to non profit organizations that provide legal services. Read the report (95KB PDF) and the resolution. (25KBPDF)
