Ninth Circuit Chief Judge Sidney Thomas
Fifth Annual Sandy Svetcov Memorial Discussion on Appellate Law, Practice, and Policy

Hon. Sidney Thomas
Chief Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit

Ben Feuer
Chairman, California Appellate Law Group LLP

If you practice in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, you should come to this program. Chief Judge Sidney Thomas, based in Montana and appointed by President Bill Clinton, is the most powerful judge on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. As Chief, he sits on every en banc panel. He also oversees judicial
misconduct complaints and directs court policy at large.

Discussion topics will include his thoughts on how to win in the Ninth Circuit, his preferences and peccadillos as a judge, what works and what doesn’t in appellate advocacy and oral argument, the case law he is proud of shaping, how living in Montana affects his worldview, his thoughts on the past and future of the Ninth Circuit as a potential split looms in Congress, and more.

About the Svetcov Memorial Lecture Series: This annual lecture and interview series honors the memory of Sandy Svetcov, who was a pillar of the California appellate bar for forty years. Each year we ask a leading member of the appellate judiciary or bar to come, speak, and answer questions on aspects and features of
modern appellate law, policy, and practice.

Section Chair: David DeJesus, Reed Smith LLP
