Topics
The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia’s (ICTY) March 2016 conviction of former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic of crimes against humanity, war crimes, and genocide was a long-awaited milestone in achieving justice and accountability for the massacre in Srebrenica and other atrocities of the Yugoslav Wars. The speakers will share insights into the construction and impact of this landmark judgment, including the legal elements of genocide, the evidence used by the Trial Chamber in finding genocide in Srebrenica, and the basis of Karadzic’s culpability. They will identify the lessons learned from the investigation of the Srebrenica graves for better understanding and responding to the needs of the families of the missing, with comparison to other investigations in Rwanda and Latin America. And, they will reflect on the victim-led litigation in U.S. courts to hold Karadzic civilly liable for his crimes, an effort that pre-dated the ICTY prosecution and helped lay the foundation for litigating genocide in the U.S. courts.
