National Association of Women Judges to Honor BASF Board Member and Chief Justice George

California Chief Justice Ronald M. George and BASF Treasurer Kelly M. Dermody of Lieff, Cabraser, Heimann & Bernstein will be honored by the National Association of Women Judges. Chief Justice George will be presented with the 2010 Joan Dempsey Klein Award in recognition of his administrative caliber and skill as a judge. and Dermody will receive the 2010 Florence K. Murray Award for her impact on women in the field of law. The awards will be presented in October during the NAWJ Annual Conference in San Francisco.


Pillsbury’s Kevin Fong Elected President of Appellate Lawyer Group

BASF member Kevin Fong, co-head of Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman’s nationally-recognized Appellate Litigation team, recently was elected President of California Academy of Appellate Lawyers, the country’s oldest lawyers’ organization dedicated to appellate practice. A graduate of both Harvard College and Harvard Law School, Fong was first admitted to CAAL in 1991.


Amarra Lee named Alumna of the Year by UC Hastings Black Student Union

Farella Braun + Martel’s Amarra Lee was recently named the 2010 Alumna of the Year by the Black Law Student Association at UC Hastings College of the Law. Lee chairs Farella’s Pipeline Subcommittee and serves as a guest lecturer for UC Hastings College of the Law’s Legal Education Opportunity Program and the Council For Legal Education Opportunity Program. She regularly volunteers with BASF’s Destination Law School program and is a 2003 recipient of BASF’s Bay Area Minority Law Student Scholarship.


Local Attorney is Trial Lawyer of the Year Finalist

The Public Justice Foundation recently honored finalists for the 2010 Trial Lawyer of the Year Award. BASF member Michael Bien of Rosen Bien & Galvan, was named a finalist for his legal team’s work on battling inadequate medical and mental health care in California’s prisons. Bien and his legal team convinced a federal three-judge panel to order California to reduce its prison population by over 40,000 prisoners within two years. According to legal experts, the order won in the consolidated cases of Coleman v. Schwarzenegger and Plata v. Schwarzenegger is the largest state prison reduction ever imposed by a federal court over the objection of state officials.


ABA Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section Honors Sandra McCandless

BASF member Sandra R. McCandless, a partner at Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal, is the 2010 recipient of the Liberty Achievement Award from the American Bar Association Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section.The award was presented during the TIPS Welcome, Diversity and Pursuit of Justice Award Reception during the 2010 ABA Annual Meeting. The award honors those lawyers and judges who take a leadership role in promoting diversity in the legal profession by demonstrating, through choices made in their careers and work done in either private or public sector positions, that they have actively promoted diversity.


BASF Mediation Panelist Appointed to Police Commission

Attorney and mediator Carol Kingsley was recently appointed to the San Francisco Police Commission by Mayor Gavin Newsom. Kingsley is a BASF Mediation Services panelist with more than 25 years of experience. She specializing in the areas of business disputes, real estate/construction and estate/trust conflicts.


San Francisco Business Times Names Top Bay Area Corporate Philanthropists

National Association of Women Lawyers Announces New Board

BASF member Patricia Gillette, Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, was recently named as a 2011 Member-at-Large of The National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL). NAWL is the leading national voluntary organization devoted to the interests of women lawyers and women’s rights.

Davis Wright Tremaine’s San Francisco office has received certification as an official “San Francisco Green Business” by the City and County of San Francisco. The San Francisco Green Business Program is considered one of the most stringent certification programs of its kind.
