Hone Your Skills, Deepen Your Client Base through LRIS Membership

By Emmy Pasternak, Community Outreach and Case Development Coordinator, LRIS

As the Outreach and Case Development Coordinator for BASF’s Lawyer Referral and Information Service (LRIS), I can extol the virtues of this service and the reasons why it may make sense for an attorney like yourself to join our program.

However, the professional experiences of two panel members, one who joined more recently, and one who has been a member for almost 20 years, describes more directly why serving as a an LRIS panel member provides value well beyond the modest annual membership fee.

Sophie BreallOne member, workers’ compensation attorney Sophie Breall, decided a few years ago that she wanted to change the focus of her practice from mainly insurance defense to plaintiff’s representation and workers’ compensation applications. She chose to join LRIS as a way to start making that shift. One client who was referred to Breall through LRIS really encapsulated the difference she wanted to make for the clients she represents. The client had a difficult case and a difficult time finding the right attorney. After much work, Breall was gratified “to have been able to help someone so deserving get his rights to medical treatment secured.”

Stephen FinestoneLong-time panel member and bankruptcy attorney Stephen Finestone, joined LRIS in 1993 and remains because he believes LRIS provides a “critical public service.” Finestone thinks that “competent legal advice should be attainable for people who are not used to needing legal advice. LRIS attorneys are screened for their qualifications; a vast improvement over the Yellow Pages or surfing the Internet.” For 18 years Finestone has received a steady stream of referrals and numerous positive client reviews. He adds, “It’s also is a great source of business.”

From the experienced lawyer honing their skills, to the seasoned attorney deepening their client base, from the solo practitioner, to the associate in a large firm, LRIS membership allows attorneys to grow their business while representing clients they can feel
good about.
