LRIS Panel Attorneys Serving Vets, Immigrants and Merchants

By Carole Conn, Director of Public Service Programs, LRIS

Lawyer Referral and Information Service panel attorneys are playing the starring role as the public service programs of the LRIS expand to fill the legal advocacy gaps for returning war veterans and military families, unrepresented immigrants, and San Francisco’s small business community.

With over one million cases back-logged at the Veteran’s Administration, LRIS expanded its Military Law Panel to include Veteran’s Benefits advocacy, and announced a training to qualify LRIS members for the new panel. The response was positive, immediate and resolute. LRIS continues to work closely with the veteran’s rights organization, Swords to Plowshares, to maximize resources and referrals. Meanwhile, LRIS has also reached out to military JAG offices struggling to meet the civil law needs of military men and women and LRIS panel attorneys once again have stepped up to assist, offering sliding scale services.

In addition, LRIS partnered with the City’s Office of Civic Engagement and Immigration Affairs earlier this summer to assist the immigrant population at a citizenship event. LRIS Immigration Panel attorneys offered free one-on-one legal advice and were credited with making the event an unqualified success. Congresswoman Jackie Speier’s Office and the City’s Immigrant Resource Center are now seeking to collaborate with the LRIS to organize similar events for the immigrant community. LRIS panel attorneys can be counted upon again to volunteer their expertise.

And LRIS continues to collaborate with Supervisor Carmen Chu’s office to bring the experience of LRIS lawyers specifically trained in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act to San Francisco’s merchant community.

In short, our panel attorneys are the heroes in these efforts spearheaded by LRIS to respond to the legal needs of our community. If you want to become part of the difference being made, become a panel member in your area of expertise.
