A New Year, A New Committment to Volunteering with BASF’s Volunteer Legal Services Program

2011 is your chance to start anew and reaffirm your commitment to our community and to pro bono work. We at the Volunteer Legal Services Program (VLSP) would like to introduce ourselves to those of you who do not know us, and re-introduce ourselves to those of you who do.

Who are we?

VLSP is the pro bono program of The Bar Association of San Francisco. Last year, VLSP staff and over 1,600 VLSP volunteers, assisted nearly 8,000 clients with legal consultation and representation in nearly every area of civil law.

What is our mission?

VLSP strives to enhance the income, self-sufficiency and general quality of life of poor and low-income San Francisco residents, by increasing legal and related social services available to this population, and by reaching out to traditionally underserved client groups, primarily through the use of volunteer resources. We are a holistic service provider – we try to address the full range of issues that are affecting our clients’ lives.

Why do pro bono work?

Millions of low-income Californian’s legal needs are unmet, which means these people have nowhere to turn for assistance. You can help open the doors to access for justice. Pro bono is a great way to get experience, while making a difference in your community.

What opportunities are available?

VLSP has both long- or short-term (full scope and limited scope) projects that need pro bono attorneys to provide advice and representation.

These include:

  • Family Law Project
  • Federal Pro Bono Project
  • Eviction Defense Project
  • Interpreter Project
  • Homeless Advocacy Project
  • Housing Negotiation Project
  • Community Organization Representation Project
  • Guardianship Project
  • Consumer Project
  • Bayview-Hunter’s Point Medical-Legal Project
  • Legal Advice and Referral Clinic
  • Low Income Tax Players Clinic

What does VLSP provide?

  • A chance to make a difference in someone’s life or in your community
  • Malpractice insurance for pro bono cases
  • Free training and MCLE credit
  • A mentor support system and supervision
  • Opportunities for both litigation and transactional pro bono work
  • Limited and full-scope opportunities
