Bar Association of San Francisco Member Benefits: Publications

Welcome to the Club, A Message from Matt Gluck, 2011 Barristers Club President

I am thrilled to have the opportunity to serve as the 2011 President of the BASF Barristers Club, the division of BASF comprised of members in their first ten years of practice and law students. The Barristers Club is devoted to serving its membership by fostering professional growth, and serving the community by facilitating and encouraging community service. We help newer attorneys become future leaders of the Bay Area legal community. The BASF Barristers membership has swelled to more than 3,000 members, which is some 40 percent of the association’s membership. With the support of active members and law firms both large and small, the Barristers Club has become a hub of activity within BASF.

Opportunities

You can take advantage of the Barristers in a number of different ways. You can look over the CLE Bulletin pullout (at the center of this newspaper) or on BASF’s website at www.sfbar.org/calendar, and attend one of the many interesting CLE offerings put on by the various Barristers sections. You can also participate in Barristers happy hours and other social and networking events, as well as Barristers community service activities like working at the San Francisco Food Bank. You can use the 2011 Barristers Pro Bono Resource Guide (released December 2010) to learn about pro bono opportunities in the community. The guide is available to download online at www.sfbar.org/pro-bono-guide.

Leadership

You will get the most out of the Barristers Club by becoming a leader within the organization. There are leadership opportunities in the club’s eighteen sections and nine committees, as well as with the Barristers’ Board of Directors. By helping the Barristers put on its programs and serve its members, you will maximize the networking and personal and professional development opportunities that are offered. You will demonstrate to current and prospective employers that you have the skills and qualities that they are looking for. By serving your colleagues and community, you will also serve yourself. One of my goals for this year is to enhance the support, opportunities and incentives to make Barristers leadership experiences more rewarding.

Barristers-eligible BASF members are automatically enrolled in the Barristers Club; no additional registration is required. I hope you make the most of your Barristers Club membership and the many professional and civic opportunities it provides. I look forward to meeting you this year.
