The Gift of Education: Hear 2003 BASF Scholarship Recipient Amarra Lee’s Inspiring Story

By Lauren Luke, Diversity Pipeline Programs Manager

BASF first awarded Bay Area Minority Law Student Scholarships in 1998. Since then, over 75 students have benefited from the generous donations of individuals, firms, and corporations in the Bay Area legal community. This scholarship reaffirms BASF’s commitment to diversity in legal education and the legal profession.

Recipients of these scholarships attend Bay Area law schools and are selected based on financial need, scholastics, commitment to public service, and barriers faced in life. Past recipients have embarked upon impressive and diverse careers. BASF scholarship recipients work with large law firms, such as Morrison & Foerster and Reed Smith; medium and small firms; District Attorneys’ offices; legal aid organizations; and on their own as solo practitioners. They have contributed to their communities in countless ways, including mentoring students, contributing hours of pro bono work, and holding leadership roles in organizations serving underrep-resented groups.

Each year, the number of scholarship awards available depends entirely on donations. Scholarship sponsors funding a full scholarship will provide a student with a total of $30,000 throughout law school. A sponsor who commits to a full, three-year scholarship receives a number of benefits, including the opportunity to name the scholarship and recognition in BASF publications. For those individuals and firms making smaller gifts, they have the option to make partial contributions to the scholarship program by giving to BASF’s Thurgood Marshall Scholarship.

To hear the personal experience of one of BASF’s 2003 scholarship recipients, Amarra Lee, an associate at Farella Braun + Martel, please visit www.sfbar.org/amarra. As a speaker at BASF’s 2010 Foundation Gala, Lee shared her compelling story and her gratitude for the support she has received from her family, her community, and BASF’s Bay Area Minority Law Student Scholarship Program.
