In-House Attorneys Show Support at BASF Foundation Gala

By Susan Cox, Director of Development, BASF Foundation

When 600 guests and sponsors arrived for this year’s BASF Foundation Gala on October 21st, they found the theme—“The Gala Is In The House”–had a dual meaning: The Gala was in our “house,” the Bar’s headquarters in the Bentley Reserve building on Battery Street, and more than 100 in-house counsel attended from Bay Area corporations.

Gala Chair and BASF Foundation Board member Joseph Catalano, Senior Vice President and Chief Litigation Counsel of Union Bank, pointed out that the event showcased our community programs, while providing a way to make new connections and greet old friends.

Sponsors were acknowledged with banners, table signs and electronic media. Conversation areas with couches and lounge chairs augmented tables and seating. A silent auction offered an imaginative selection of high quality getaways, gifts and luxury experiences.

Speakers included Volunteer Legal Services Program (VLSP) client Michael Fenton, and Amarra Lee of Farella Braun + Martel LLP, who was a 2003 Bay Area Minority Law Student Scholarship recipient. Lunches with seven corporate General Counsel from some of the Bay Area’s largest corporations were among the most popular items in the silent auction, raising a total of $9,000! They were:

  • Dorian Daley, Oracle
  • Seth Jaffe, Williams-Sonoma
  • Hewitt Pate, Chevron
  • John Moss and Sam Fleischman, salesforce.com
  • Douglas Melamed, Intel
  • Morris Hirsch, Union Bank
  • Laureen Seeker, McKesson Corporation
  • Christopher Ball, Bank of the West

Despite a difficult financial year, the Gala raised more than $325,000.
