Reduce Your 2010 Taxes

Donate to the BASF Foundation by December 31

At this time of year, we are often urged to “give strategically,” to “maximize our tax benefits.”

I’d like to take this opportunity to urge you to give from the heart instead. A gift you make before December 31 will help reduce the taxes you pay this year – but it will do so much more.

Lawyers have a special role to play in supporting BASF’s work in the community.

You know how important it is that underserved people have access to legal services. You know how important it is that the legal profession is diversified. You can truly understand how having a lawyer at your side in the fight of your life really makes a difference. You can truly understand that law school can transform a life, and an entire family.

BASF’s Volunteer Legal Services Program provided access to justice to more than 7,000 low-income people in 2010 by helping to save homes, protect women and children from their abusers and helped veterans fight for benefits. The program costs about $3 million a year to administer, and it provides $11 million in free legal services, mostly by connecting people in need with the right pro bono lawyer, and often by providing them with social workers, too.

BASF’s Diversity Pipeline programs reach from high school to law school. School-To-College, Law Academy, the Mock Trial and Destination Law School programs give underserved high school students a taste of the law and legal principles. They get a realistic shot at college with college trips, mentors, and SAT prep scholarships. Once they are in college, the Destination Law School program gives them a road map and mentors to help them apply to law school. And the Bay Area Minority Law Student Scholarship Program has distributed more than $1 million in law student scholarships in the past decade and will continue to do more with your help.

A gift you make now will help reduce the taxes you pay this year – and it will do so much more.
