Campaign for VLSP and Diversity Works to Raise $200K for BASF Programs

By Susan Cox, Director of Development

The annual Lawyers Campaign for VLSP and Diversity supports BASF’s community and diversity pipeline programs, and the 2011 campaign has an ambitious goal of $200,000.

This year’s chairs are Teresa Johnson of Howard Rice Nemerovski, Canady Falk & Rabkin, and Bill Lawyers Campaign for VLSP and DiversityKissinger of Bingham McCutchen, both members of the BASF Foundation Board of Directors. The foundation’s task is to raise funds for the Volunteer Legal Services Program (VLSP), the Bay Area Minority Law Student Scholarship Program, School-To-College, Destination Law School and the additional minority pipeline programs that have done so much in the past decade to diversify the legal profession.

“We rely entirely on donations for the $3 million spent each year providing free legal services for the poor, awarding minority law student scholarships, and getting at-risk high school kids into college. The money works hard. Please join with us and other BASF members in supporting the powerhouse of programs we provide to the poor and underserved of our city,” Teresa Johnson said as the campaign launched
in October.

With more than $125,000 raised to date, the campaign is well on the way to achieving its goal of $200,000 from individuals this year. “Volunteers will be making calls and writing letters between now and the end of the year, but of course there are too many BASF members for us to contact everyone,” said Bill Kissinger. “The money we receive from hundreds of lawyers across the Bay Area provides the working capital to provide much needed services to those most in need. Whether you choose to support a particular program, or simply allow us to use your gift where it is most needed, your contribution is enormously appreciated.”

Lawyers truly understand that having a lawyer at your side makes a big difference. They are the only people who know from experience that law school can transform a life, and an entire family. Lawyers are also in the forefront of efforts to diversify the profession.

“The 2011 Lawyers Campaign for VLSP and diversity will remain active until December 31,” Teresa Johnson said. “Please send your donation by the end of the year and you can help to change a life.”
