LRIS Increases Outreach to the Filipino Community

Tagalog Speaking Legal Interviewer Added to LRIS Team

When you refer clients to BASF’s Lawyer Referral and Information Service (LRIS) there is no phone tree to navigate, no interminable wait to speak to someone, no transfer to a different operator necessary. Client calls are quickly answered by one of the courteous, helpful and highly-trained legal interviewers who conduct a brief interview about the nature of the client’s legal matter. Legal interviewers can arrange a half-hour consultation for clients with an insured, experienced attorney through LRIS; help determine whether clients are eligible for reduced fee or pro bono attorney services; or direct them to one of the almost 300 legal and social resources in the state or county that may be most helpful to their situation.

This coming year, the legal interviewer staff will assist approximately 50,000 people via email and telephone, in English, Spanish, French, Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese and now, Tagalog.

Representing almost 10 percent of the Bay Area population, Tagalog speakers can contact LRIS and seek assistance in their language to find the most appropriate referral for their matter.

Clients pay a $35 fee for the referral to a lawyer which includes an initial half-hour consultation with the lawyer experienced in the appropriate area of law. In personal injury and workers’ compensation cases, as well as in cases of financial hardship, this fee is waived or delayed.

The goal of LRIS is to ensure that the legal consumer is provided with information regarding available legal resources, including referrals to experienced attorneys or to appropriate community or governmental agencies, as their needs require. Currently, nearly 500 attorneys participate in LRIS, and collectively represent experience in over 100 areas of law. On average, LRIS attorneys have been in practice for 20 years and have been LRIS attorney members for 11 years.
