2008 Scholarship Recipients Graduate: Diversity Pipeline is Widening

BASF congratulates the 2008 Bay Area Minority Law Student Scholarship students who graduated this Spring as they begin their legal careers.

2008 Scholarship Recipients

Crystal Becerra, Santa Clara Law, will clerk at the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office in its post-bar program. She looks forward to gaining additional experience in this field and plans to pursue a career as a public defender.

Ann Kariuki, University of San Francisco School of Law, will work with the Santa Clara District Attorney’s office through its post-bar program to gain litigation experience. This scholarship enabled her to reach out to attorneys in the BASF network for mentoring and internship opportunities. She connected with young attorneys and other law students through BASF’s various volunteer opportunities and professional networking events.

Aida Macedo, UC Davis School of Law, plans to continue her work for the public interest as a civil rights attorney. With the support of BASF’s scholarship she took on volunteer externship opportunities with Public Advocates, Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights, MALDEF, and the Honorable Lawrence K. Karlton. The scholarship supported her passion and commitment to social justice. Aida is the first person in her extended family with a college degree and now a professional degree.

Yuri Reyes, University of San Francisco School of Law, plans to move to San Diego and search for a bar clerkship in either employment or criminal law. Through volunteering with BASF’s School-To-College Program, she met wonderful students at Balboa High School and helped them apply for college.

Elizabeth Tran, UC Hastings College of the Law, plans to work in business litigation in San Francisco. With this scholarship, Elizabeth focused on her legal studies, instead of worrying about how to cover educational and living expenses. The scholarship made it possible for her to extern for the Honorable A. James Robertson II, study abroad, and give back to the community during the past three years.
