What Difference Did a Mentor Make in Your Life?

There are numerous volunteer opportunities this fall for attorneys who wish to mentor a high school student. Students in BASF’s diversity pipeline programs need guidance getting into college, making career choices and honing their analytical skills.

School-To-College

Be a role model for students in BASF’s School-To-College (STC) program. According to Therese Stewart, chief deputy city attorney and founder of the STC program, “Mentoring young people through the process of applying for college means more than you might imagine. You help them envision themselves not only as college students but as educated adults who can achieve whatever they put their minds to.”

Mock Trial

Through BASF’s Mock Trial program, you can help students build their intellectual skills, gain confidence in their ability to support an argument, and open their eyes to the possibilities offered by a legal career. According to Mission High School Mock Trial Coach Thomas Green of the US Department of Justice, “Coaching mock trial is something you will not leave once you get started. You see high school students’ hopes and expectations for their future change right before your eyes. For the many practicing attorneys with too infrequent opportunities in court, it also serves as a defacto trial advocacy class or refresher.” Green has coached the team since 1999.

Law Academy

Creative and inspiring curriculum is built into several core classes of BASF’s Law Academy program. Mentors help students learn basic legal concepts, the importance of community activism and interview and job skills which prepare them to join the workforce directly out of college. “The students we work with are exceptionally motivated and talented. It is a joy to see them develop as leaders, public speakers, and advocates. Both the mentors and mentees benefit greatly from Law Academy” said Ryan Sandrock, Barristers Club Law Academy committee co-chair and associate with Sidley Austin LLP.
