The Gala is in the House!
Sponsors Bring Event Half Way to Fundraising Goal

The 2010 BASF Foundation Annual Gala will take place on Thursday, October 21. This year’s theme is “The Gala is in the House!” It will take place at the beautiful Bankers Hall at the Bentley Reserve building (BASF’s home for the past three years), building on the popular success of last year’s “mix and mingle” format with food stations, bars and a silent auction. Our special guests this year will include members of the judiciary and more than fifty in-house and general counsel from area corporations.

“The Gala’s sponsors are the strong threads in our safety net of services. Thanks to them we have already* raised $142,500 in sponsorships, which is nearly half way to our goal of $330,000,” said Gala Chair Joseph Catalano, Senior Vice President and Chief Litigation Counsel for Union Bank.

The Gala is more important this year than ever before. “Our challenge this year isn’t simply that times are tough—we all know they are—it’s the upside-down business model of the typical non-profit. When the economy struggles, business doesn’t drop off for us—it grows! More people need help than ever before,” said BASF Foundation Director of Development Sue Cox.

National headlines are suddenly close to home. One recent caller to VLSP ran out of unemployment benefits and could lose his home. Another’s landlord was foreclosed upon. BASF received many more applicants for its minority law student scholarships than could be helped. City services are being curtailed, dropping more low-income and at-risk people into the safety net provided by our Volunteer Legal Services Program. Financial aid for college is more difficult and competitive than ever, leaving low-income and diverse high school graduates at underserved schools even lower on the rung of the success ladder.

The BASF Foundation Gala is not simply a party, although it’s that, too. More than 800 partners, associates, judges, corporate counsel and other friends come together that evening to celebrate a legal community that’s a national model of engagement, concern and support for people who might otherwise be forgotten.
