Profile of a Donor: Sarah Flanagan, Partner at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman

Sarah G. Flanagan is a long-time supporter of our Volunteer Legal Services Program (VLSP). Born and raised in San Francisco, she has practiced with Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP since 1980. She has a general litigation practice, with current emphasis in the areas of education, health care and environmental law.

BASF: Why do you donate to VLSP through the BASF Foundation?

Sarah Flanagan (SF): I was inspired to start donating to VLSP by Tanya Neiman (VLSP’s late Executive Director) and her holistic approach to providing assistance to those in need. Tanya’s vision struck me as the correct approach – to help individuals move forward on a path to a better life rather than “just” helping them to solve a specific legal problem. I have continued to do so because VLSP has shown over the years both that its programs have a positive impact on the lives of many in our community and that it spends its donors’ dollars wisely (leveraging those dollars with volunteer services). The need for donor dollars now is more intense than ever because of the curtailment of public services as a result of budget cuts.Sarah Flanagan

BASF: What program are you most interested in supporting and why?

SF: The VLSP programs are all valuable, but I especially appreciate the focus on children in the Family Law Project. Early intervention has the promise of helping children achieve their potential and become positive contributors to the community.

BASF: What would you be if you weren’t
a lawyer?

SF: A mystery writer (likely unpublished). I am an avid mystery reader, though I generally do not read legal mysteries because it is hard for me to suspend disbelief in an area I know so well.

BASF: What is your proudest accomplishment (professionally or personally)?

SF: When my widowed father was 87, I invited him to live with me, and he did so until his death at age 90. I was pleased that I was able to provide comfort and support for him in his later years, and I benefited from the experience as well.
