Judge Henderson to High School Students: “Work Hard; Stay Focused”

Judge Henderson

Judge Henderson

On March 19, Judge Thelton Henderson of the U.S. District Court, Northern District of California visited Thurgood Marshall High School and addressed a group of students on the topic of dreaming big and being ready when “destiny comes calling.”

In attendance were students that are currently enrolled in the Farella Braun + Martel/Thurgood Marshall Academic High School Afterschool Credit Recovery Program.

This program was made possible by a generous donation by Farella Braun + Martel last fall. In collaboration with ConnectEd: The California Center for College and Career and BASF, this afterschool program is a model for linked learning—a high school improvement approach that connects strong academics with real-world experience.

The curriculum, designed by ConnectEd, infuses law-related themes into the school’s credit-recovery program and offers opportunities for students to learn from those in the legal field outside of the classroom. BASF’s role is to complement the curriculum with extra-curricular activities.

The students had been learning about the judge through the documentary Soul of Justice: Thelton Henderson’s American Journey. Through Judge Henderson’s opening remarks and a question and answer period, the students learned first-hand about the life of a man who has played an important role in the field of civil rights as a lawyer, educator, and jurist.

They were provided with advice and an important message: “If I can do it. So can you.”

The visit by Judge Henderson was made possible by Farella Braun + Martel.
