Mock Trial Program Succeeds with Support from Volunteers and Firmsl

BASF’s mock trial program is hosting its 2013 competition February 19, 21, 26 and 28 at the San Francisco Superior Court. This will be the culmination of more than four months of practices, scrimmages and coaching by a diverse group of San Francisco attorneys representing government, solo, small, medium and large firms.
The mock trial program is an inter-scholastic city-wide competition where high school students try a hypothetical criminal case. There are eight teams. Many of the students are diverse and come from under-served schools.

Joining the coaching squads for the first time are attorneys from Jones Day; Rouda Feder Tietjen & McGuinn; United States Attorney’s Office; Sard Verbinnen; Office of the District Attorney; de la Peña & Holiday; Law Offices of Kasie W. Lee; Simmons & Ungar; and Paul Hastings.

Equally important to the success of this program is the financial and in-kind support of San Francisco law firms that sponsor and invite teams into their firms to practice. New supporters this year include Nossaman and K & L Gates. Money raised through sponsorships send the winning team to represent San Francisco in the state competition in March and also help fund activities for the students during the practice period.

BASF’s program is administered by the Barristers Club Mock Trial Committee and Diversity department. New to the committee is Marie Ma from the Gap.

Lawyers volunteer to coach the fundamentals of persuasive public speaking and evidence advocacy, demonstrate techniques and critique the students in preparation for the city-wide competition.

The program was created to help students acquire a working knowledge of our judicial system, and to help develop analytical abilities and communication skills. Students gain confidence in their ability to present and support an argument, and often open their eyes to the possibilities offered by college, law school, and a career in law.

If you would like to volunteer in February to score or judge the competitions, please contact Jareem Gunter at jgunter@sfbar.org.
