A New Year’s Resolution You Can Actually Keep: Lawyer Referral and Information Service Membership

By Emmy Pasternak Community Outreach and Case Development Coordinator, LRIS

It’s that time again – time to make those resolutions you intend to keep, which inevitably fall to the bottom of the “to do” list. Why not make a resolution you can keep? Resolve to join BASF’s Lawyer Referral and Information Service (LRIS) – and now at the half year rate! Increasing your clientele and income are good resolutions. Providing the public with legal services and supporting The Bar Association of San Francisco’s charitable programs are good resolutions. Accomplish all of this by simply filling out the LRIS Attorney Agreement and area of practice applications (located at www.sfbar.org/lawyerreferrals/att-join.aspx), and paying the nominal membership fee.

Might you also have resolved to make this the year you’ll put more resources towards marketing your practice? Become an LRIS panel attorney and cross this off your list. Our marketing program is robust and includes television, radio, video, multiple internet platforms (Google ad words, SEO, Live Chat, podcasts, etc.), social media, as well as ongoing collaborations with the courts, city supervisors, and countless community- based organizations. We also participate in many community resource events every year to connect directly with potential legal consumers.

As a result of this marketing effort, LRIS receives approximately 50,000 requests annually for legal assistance. Through careful screening, our multi-lingual legal interviewers determine whether the legal matter merits referral to a lawyer or whether the client’s needs are best served through an agency resource. Current LRIS members have said how much the screening of the cases saves them time and allows for a more promising match to occur.

Fees received from attorney referrals are put back into enhancing outreach to potential clients, while a generous portion is reserved for BASF’s charitable programs, including School-To-College, Bay Area Minority Law Student Scholarship, and the Volunteer Legal Services Program (VLSP).

In short, when you become an LRIS member, we partner with you to make those New Year’s resolutions to grow your practice, increase outreach and improve access to justice for those less fortunate a reality.
