Judge Thelton Henderson to Receive ABA 2013 Thurgood Marshall Award

Beginning with his work in the struggle against segregation in the 1960s, Senior Judge Thelton Henderson of the U.S. District Court for the Northern California District, has devoted his fifty year career to making the law work fairly for everyone. To honor his dedication and commitment, the American Bar Association (ABA) has named him the winner of the prestigious 2013 Thurgood Marshall Award.

Judge Thelton HendersonEstablished in 1992 by the ABA and the Section of Individual Rights and Responsibilities (IR&R), the award honors U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, who epitomized individual commitment, in word and action, to the cause of civil rights in this country. The award, given annually to only one person, recognizes similar long-term contributions by other members of the legal profession to the advancement of civil rights, civil liberties, and human rights in the United States.

Past BASF President and Member of the IR&R Council Mark Schickman, Freeland Cooper & Foreman, said, “Judge Henderson’s pioneering role breaking color barriers, his contributions to social justice, his lifelong government service and history in and commitment to the civil rights movement embody everything that Thurgood Marshall stood for. There have been many distinguished recipients since Justice Marshall received the inaugural award in 1992, and the IR&R Council is proud that Judge Thelton Henderson is joining that list. And it’s great that we can do this in San Francisco.”

The Thurgood Marshall Award is given annually to one person and past recipients include San Francisco’s Dale Minami of Minami Tamaki, for his work representing Fred Korematsu, a Japanese American who was jailed after resisting being sent to internment camps during WWII; Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg; and former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno.

Judge Henderson will receive the award during the ABA’s Annual Meeting being held in San Francisco next summer. The award dinner will be Saturday, August 10. BASF will post additional information as it comes available.
