Join the Right to Civil Counsel Movement; It’s Happening in San Francisco

On October 29, Jim Brosnahan, The Bar Association of San Francisco’s Justice Gap Committee, and the Volunteer Legal Services Program (VLSP) hosted a reception to celebrate and launch San Francisco’s historic Right to Civil Counsel Ordinance and Pilot Program.

San Francisco is the nation’s first “Right to Civil Counsel City” that recognizes everyone should have access to legal services in cases involving basic human needs, including housing, child custody, sustenance, safety, and health.

The focus of the pilot program is eviction defense work, where attorneys represent low-income clients in their unlawful detainer actions. Other pro bono opportunities that are part of this work include the following areas: family law, consumer law, and supplemental security income advocacy. VLSP provides training, support, and malpractice insurance for all of these opportunities.

Thank you to Morrison & Foerster for hosting the reception!
