Volunteer Mediators needed for Labor Code issues

The Office of the Director of the Department of Industrial Relations is seeking volunteers to help mediate allegations of retaliation that come before the Commissioner.

Briefly, when an employee exercises some protected right under the Labor Code (such as making a wage claim, using family sick leave, going on jury duty, etc.) and then experiences an adverse action (such as being terminated), the employee may bring a retaliation complaint to the Labor Commissioner if they believe that the adverse action was in retaliation for exercising their rights.
The mediation program is designed to bring the parties together for a three-hour window of time. If they can't resolve the dispute, it goes back to the Labor Commissioner for investigation and a decision. The mediations are held during weekdays and are typically either held from 9-12 or from 1-4 at the Office of the Director, 455 Golden Gate Ave. in SF. A brief "subject matter" training is provided to the mediator before the mediation.
