BASF Office Closed December 25 - December 29

The BASF and Justice & Diversity Center offices will be closed the week of December 25.

Statement on the Passing of San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee

“We cannot count the number of ways in which Mayor Lee’s office collaborated with BASF and JDC on life-changing issues and initiatives in San Francisco,” said Yolanda Jackson, Executive Director of BASF and JDC.  “We are really proud to have had Mayor Lee as the first Asian American mayor of San Francisco.  He was always open-minded and willing to work toward solutions to many of the City’s largest challenges.  I personally enjoyed working with Mayor Lee and his office. We will truly miss his leadership.”

Legislative Budget Cuts to the California Courts Threaten Access to Justice

Since 2008, California courts have faced drastic budget cuts, disrupting operation and function in all 58 counties. The fiscal allocation to the San Francisco Superior Court has declined over 40 percent since then. As a result, the San Francisco Superior Court was forced to lay off 13 Commissioners, redirect court settlement conferences, and eliminate numerous assistance programs to pro per litigants.  In our county and others, courts’ inability to complete jury trials on consecutive court days due to understaffed courtrooms have prevented litigants from efficiently and fairly disposing of their cases. Our courts have not been able to recover the amount of human resources required to administer to the public’s needs.
