Areas of Experience: Business; Commercial; Construction; Insurance and Reinsurance; Insurance Bad Faith; Environmental; Fee Disputes; Product and Premises Liability; Personal Injury; Malpractice – Agent, Accountant, Psychologist, Attorney, and other Professional Liability; Fidelity and Surety; Contracts; Fraud; Maritime and Admiralty; Real Estate; Landlord/Tenant; Intellectual Property

Jeffrey Kaufman has successfully practiced law for over 40 years.  Building on his extensive experience in trials, mediations and arbitrations, in 2006 he completed 40 hours of Certified Comprehensive Mediator Training and began mediating disputes.  He also completed courses in Transitioning to an ADR Practice, Principles of Mediation, Appellate Mediation, and Mediation of Intellectual Property Disputes, all sponsored by the American Bar Association Section on Dispute Resolution, of which he is a member, as well as a course in Mediation "Do’s and Don’ts" sponsored by the Bar Association of San Francisco.

Kaufman has mediated disputes involving varied subject matters, including personal injury, construction defects, insurance, indemnity, ADA enforcement, the Fair Employment and Housing Act, premises liability, corporate shareholder litigation, corporate dissolution, contract disputes, real estate, leases, landlord/tenant, lease purchase agreements, real estate partition, fee disputes, employment discrimination, racial discrimination/retaliation, cyber squatting, auto/bike/motorcycle accidents, lemon law, and neighbor disputes.

Kaufman finds great reward in bringing disputing parties together and empowering them to craft their own resolutions.  He combines his well-developed legal and people skills, his ability to listen and discern what motivates people, and his knowledge of settlement dynamics to assist litigants in bridging their differences.  He has seen the excesses and waste of litigation and the drain and strain it causes on financial and emotional resources.  Whether you win or lose, litigation takes its toll.  He thoroughly enjoys and looks forward to the challenge of finding a solution that's a win-win for all.

In addition to being a mediator for the Mediation Services of BASF, he is on the Marin County Superior Court Settlement Conference Panel, and served as a pro-tem settlement judge in San Francisco as well as a small claims court judge.  He is also an arbitrator for the San Francisco Bar Association’s Attorney/Client Fee Disputes Program.  Respected mediators endorse him as "creative," "productive," "effective in driving large, ego-filled groups towards consensus," with "a keen sense of settlement dynamics," and "difficult to imagine a more qualified person."

Kaufman has the AV rating by Martindale Hubbell, the highest rating for ethics and legal ability based on reviews of his peers, and was selected by Martindale Hubbell as one of San Francisco’s Top AV-Rated Lawyers in 2014 and 2015.

In addition, after being nominated by his peers, he was selected as a Northern California Super Lawyer in 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017, in the areas of Alternative Dispute Resolution, Business Litigation, and Insurance Coverage, representing the top 5% of attorneys.

He is admitted to practice in California (Bar No. 48095) and Wisconsin (Bar No. 1014037), as well as before the United States Supreme Court (1979), and various United States Courts of Appeal and United States District Courts.
